Alma arrived in Canada from war-torn Nicaragua as a refugee at age 18 with a few personal belongings, some English and a dream. Within 9 years she'd completed a BA in Political Science/Communications (York University), a Journalism Post-Graduate Diploma (Humber College), balancing parenthood, school and work to complete her education. She will soon complete a Business Management certificate from Ryerson University.

Alma and her family have lived in Pickering since 2003. She's worked for Bell Media for 14 years and concurrently publishes Alma Latina Online Magazine. Alma has volunteered for Hispanic-Canadian Alliance (Treasurer), Pickering's Advisory Committee on Diversity, Community Partners in Diversity Committee and with Pickering's new Cultural Advisory Committee. Alma is a member of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade.

Alma's Zumba-cheesecake-comedy-loving bookworm passionate about community work. She hopes to earn the trust and support of residents of Ward 1 and bring a strong female and diverse voice to Pickering.
