Episode Notes

In this episode of the Coffee Talks Road Show, SummerFest 2013 Edition, Jessica Scheffee, Outreach Co-ordinator of Epilepsy Durham Region is in the hot seat talking with Brian about the 14th Annual Mark F. Seetner Memorial Golf Tournament taking place on the south course at Deer Creek Golf Club on Thursday, June 20th.  Brian and Jessica discuss the namesake of the golf tournament, Mr. Seetner, as well as what players can expect from the tournament and how the funds raised go to assist people in our community living with epilepsy.  This year at the tournament boasts a hole-in-one prize of a 2014 Elantra from Clarington Hyundai.  There is also a silent auction with some fantastic items up for bid including a year’s worth of ribs from Melanie Pringles, a Keurig coffee machine, and many restaurant gift cards to name a few of the items.

Jessica explains that 1 in 100 people in our community living with epilepsy and how Epilepsy Durham Region is a grass-roots organization with every dollar raised going to outreach programing and education about epilepsy.  Further, Epilepsy Durham Region does not receive funding from the government, nor the United Way, so the organization relies very heavily on events like the Mark F. Seetner Memorial Golf Tournament to raise the funds in order for it to continue its great work within the Region.

Some of the other ways Epilepsy Durham Region raises funds is via Lora the Lavender Labrador.  Lora is a purple dog created by Dianne McKenzie, Executive Director of Epilepsy Durham Region, originally designed to give to children to comfort them while they undergo the diagnostic procedures or surgical treatments of epilepsy.  This year, Epilepsy Durham Region debuted Edison the Super Hero Dog, to offer further comfort to children and assist in fundraising.  Both Edison and Lora are available for purchase at Epilepsy Durham Region.

Contact Epilepsy Durham Region at www.epilepsydurham.com or call the office at 905-430-3090.
