In this PREMIERE edition of Coffee Talks RoadShow, Brian travels to Essential Communications in Whitby to have a Coffee with Tina Wieringa, Program Director. We discuss starting a business in Durham, The Local Biz Expo for new local Entrepreneurs, and how to connect with Essential Communications.

Brian sits down for a tasty Green Tea (yes, it was not coffee today) at the headquarters of Essential Communications and their Program Director, Tina Wieringa.

With March comes March Madness for sports fans, St. Patrick's Day for the Irish, and the Local Biz Expo for Durham's budding entrepreneurs. March 20th, 2013 marks the 9th Annual Local Biz Expo for local businesses, and Essential Communications has been at the helm steering fresh business owners onto the path of success.


Essential Communications specializes in the delivery and continuous coach for entrepreneurs who are a part of the Ontario Self Employment Benefit Program (OSEB).

The Local Biz Expo is on March 20, 2013 from 4pm-8pm at the Ajax Convention Centre, 550 Beck Crescent Ajax, ON

Self Employment

Essential Communications offers the platform and support for local residents to start their own business while receiving a living allowance. This program, the Ontario Self Employment Benefit Program (“OSEB”) is funded through Employment Ontario.

42 Week program, including 7 weeks in class.

The Criteria: someone who have been on employment insurance within the last 2 years or maternity or paternity in the past 3-5 years.

It is Durham Region’s equivalent of ‘Dragon’s Den’, with an extensive intake including a panel presentation, business plan construction and a marketing panel review.

Last intake there were 140 applicants with 27 accepted, but that varies throughout the year. 125 new business are started with this program every year.
