Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan Takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
On August 23, 2014, City of Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan along with his family and Councillor Doug Dickerson gathered in David Farr Park on Glennana Road in Pickering. Mayor Ryan had accepted the ALS Bucket Challenge from many people including Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, PIE Restaurant Owner Jon Purdy, Dr. Kathleen Fulup of the Amberlea Animal Hospital, and Brianna - Councillor Dickerson’s Granddaughter.
Mayor Ryan chose David Farr Park for a reason. David Farr was a Pickering Councillor in the 90’s, first elected in 1994, and did not finish his term of office as he had succumbed to ALS. Having the challenge take place in the park named in the memory of the late Councillor seemed very fitting to complete the ALS ice Bucket Challenge to create awareness and raise funds to help find a cure for this terrible disease.
“I think I share a concern with you that the event is becoming more important than the actual cause that we are trying to raise money for”, said Mayor Ryan, making reference to the Ice Bucket Challenge. He continued “I am not going to nominate anyone else for the Ice Bucket Challenge, but what I am going to do it ask each and every one of you to become an ALS Hero, make your donation, and learn more about this terrible disease and help us find a cure.”
He briefly paused before he turned around to pour the remaining ice into his bucket. Being a great sport, he picked up his bucket filled with icy water and finished the challenge by dumping it over his head. In great spirits, he finished his video by saying “… now do your part”. Along with completing the challenge, Mayor Ryan has also opted to make a financial contribution to ALS.
