Pickering Recognizes the Passing of Former Mayor George Ashe

Pickering, ON, August 5, 2014 – All flags at City of Pickering facilities will be flown at half-mast to recognize the passing of Pickering’s first mayor, the Honourable George Ashe.

George Ashe was a dedicated public servant from the late 1950s to the early 1980s.  After his career in municipal government, he was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament in 1977, and later held several cabinet portfolios as Ministers of Revenue, Government Services, Energy, and Chair of the Management Board of Cabinet, in successive Davis and Miller governments.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of George Ashe,” said Mayor Dave Ryan.  “While history books will recognize him as Pickering’s very first mayor, we will remember him as both a dear friend and proud community leader.”
