Durham Regional Police Services Board Announces Retirement of Chief Ewles

At its meeting today, the Durham Regional Police Services Board accepted Chief

Ewles’ notice of retirement, effective May 31, 2014.

Chief Mike Ewles Announces Retirement“On behalf of the Police Services Board and Durham Regional Council, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation and congratulations to Chief Ewles for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service,” stated Board and Regional Chair Roger Anderson. “Under his command, we have witnessed a significant drop in crime and among the best clearance rates in the country. We are working more closely with our community partners as a problem solving organization and not simply reacting to criminal incidents. Chief Ewles has positioned the DRPS for long term success and his contributions will leave their mark on the Service for years to come. We wish him all the very best for a happy, fulfilling and healthy retirement.”

Chief Ewles began his career with the Durham Regional Police Service in May
1982 and served in a uniform patrol capacity in Ajax. Over his career, he has
worked in every community in the Region of Durham and has served in Tactical
Support, Duty Inspector’s Office, the Criminal Intelligence Branch and the
Employee Services Branch. He was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2002,
was sworn in as Deputy Chief in June 2006, and as Chief in May 2007.

“It is with mixed emotions that I made the announcement to the Board today,”
said Chief Ewles. I’ve committed my entire professional life to an organization in
which I take great pride, that I love and care deeply about. But after seven years
as Chief, it’s time to pass the torch, and to focus more energy on my family and
community interests. The men and women of the DRPS are the finest in the
country, and it is has been a privilege to serve with and for them as their Chief.”
