The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, Pickering, (“TSA Pickering”) celebrated their Grand Re-Opening on May 9, 2011. On hand to commemorate the ribbon cutting were the City of Pickering’s Mayor, Dave Ryan, accompanied by Councillors Doug Dickerson and Peter Rodrigues. Eileen Fitzpatrick, president of the Canadian Memorial Services, joined Rick Hall of the Mount Pleasant Group, with Jeff Dennis, Paul Carter, Graham Hargrave and other staff in representing the TSA, Pickering to mark the event. Manohar Virdi of TSA Pickering and Pickering High School Co-operative student, Jenay Simpson, proudly held the red satin ribbon taunt while Mayor Ryan and Eileen Fitzpatrick completed the ceremonial cuts.
Beautifully refurbished, this facility now boasts a bright, tasteful décor throughout with a focus on the family. The lower level of 1057 Brock Road has, by far, undergone the largest transformation. The building is now barrier-free with a fully functional elevator as well as other improvements to ensure complete accessibility. Two intimate arrangement offices proffer some comfort to relatives while making the necessary final arrangements during such a difficult time.
There is now a fully functional dining room to accommodate formal Celebration of Life meals with seating for up to 50 people. The family may choose to have TSA Pickering’s staff cater the meal or relatives may wish to provide their own caterer. Families can also prepare a menu themselves, perhaps honouring the deceased by offering one of the loved one’s favourite meals. Clients are informed that the servery contains amenities to warm the repast only, and that cooking is not available on site. A beautiful touch to this room is the fireplace, over which a large flat-screen television hangs. All the visitation and reception rooms provide up-to-the-date audio/visual equipment, offering the family the opportunity to prepare slideshows, movies and music to enhance their loved one’s memorial.
Also located on the lower level is the boutique-like product showroom. Frosted double glass doors open on a private room offering all of the necessities of burial from caskets to vaults, urns to memorial jewelry. This room is made comfortable by soft lighting and a large divan on which family members may relax while they make the final arrangements.
Upstairs, the front reception area has been opened up to provide a large lobby lit mainly by natural light through a northern wall of windows. Entering off the lobby is the Brock visitation and memorial room, which has been fully updated with new furniture, carpeting and wall art. Over the fireplace in this room is another large flat screen television complete with a live feed to the Chapel next door. This is to accommodate overflow from a largely attended, formal funeral service. The Kingston visitation and memorial room, also located on this floor, is to undergo a similar transformation in the next few months.
The Chapel is the only room in the building that has maintained its original features. With warm honeyed oak walls and pews, this room is a stately, comfortable setting for a more formal service.
The Simple Alternative provides services to match all faiths and cultures. These options help grieving families to celebrate the life of a loved one via both a Celebration of Life ceremony and a formal Funeral as suits their wishes. But why leave it to your family to make those hard, last decisions for you when you may pre-plan your very own funeral in the comfort of a brand-new facility staffed by compassionate and knowledgeable directors.
