Did you know that a little piece of Bavaria resides in Pickering Village, Ajax? It is called Sauter’s Restaurant! Nestled into a corner of the Pickering Village Courtyard, Sauter’s is a wonderful Bavarian gem, offering old world nostalgia in a cozy décor of deep reds and dark woods – perfect for an intimate dinner for two or a raucous gathering of friends and family.
Established in 1987, the menu has now been wonderfully expanded since 2009 under Vaithilingam Kumar’s new management. Although the name has changed to Sauter’s Restaurant you can still expect the warm, friendly service and fantastic food that Sauter’s is historically known for. Sauter’s still boasts the traditional German fare of fantastic schnitzels and goulashes; however, Kumar has introduced savory Italian pasta dishes and flavourful vegetarian options. “We want to mix it up a bit,” Kumar explains how, within the next few months, Sauter’s will be expanding the international menu to include more Italian and French choices as well as introducing a fresh seafood selection and healthy choice sandwiches. If you are a regular, you will still see a familiar face at Sauter’s as the original owner’s daughter has stayed on to work with Kumar and the exciting new menu.
Chef Gobi focuses on “from-scratch” homemade food and the five different varieties of schnitzel are still Sauter’s signature dishes with the Jaeger Schnitzel being the most popular. Kumar’s specialty, to be unveiled in the spring, is Rosemary Chicken. Amongst the traditional Czechoslovakian, Hungarian and German Ales, Kumar has also added two domestic drafts and expanded the wine list to include an international selection of reds and whites for every pallet.
The menu, beer and wine lists are not the only things being expanded at Sauter’s. Kumar has added a weekend breakfast service featuring intricate omelets as the chef’s specialty however, your morning treat does not end there: Sauter’s makes Saturday and Sunday breakfast even more decadent with a breakfast buffet served between 8:00 am and noon for $4.99, including coffee. For the Monday to Friday crowd, there is a weekly lunch menu spotlighting fine pastas and seafood. Come summer you will find Sauter’s focus will shift to upgrades to the courtyard patio and the addition of live music for your listening pleasure.
A perfect place to host a party, the main dining room holds up to 65 guests or you may prefer the smaller, more intimate banquet facility upstairs with a capacity of 40. However, should your party be more personal and the weather be fair, enjoy your meal on the licensed patio in the courtyard.
Kumar understands how local business plays a major roll in the quality of life of a community. He appreciates the grassroots, family orientated events and his warm restauranteur style embraces this philosophy. Sauter’s has a number of charity events on the horizon including Celebrity Bartenders, sponsoring local teams, and a spring charity golf tournament to support the “Image is Everything” MRI campaign at Ajax-Pickering General Hospital.
With 24 years of experience in the industry, Kumar is a career restauranteur. Previously, Kumar owned and ran the Liverpool Arms in Pickering off Liverpool Road and he still owns the Liverpool Arms in Scarborough. When he arrived in Canada in 1984, Kumar worked in a chicken deli. Since then he has either worked in, or owned, restaurants whether they were wing places, bar & grills, or they featured Italian, French or Mexican casual fine dining.
Kumar is no stranger to the Bavarian way of life. He lived and studied in Germany for 3 years and speaks German. If you wish to learn a few key phrases yourself, take your time in the restrooms and listen carefully to the “Learn German” CDs that are piped in. Impress your friends with a hearty Beifall!
