The Harmony Center is just that; living up to its name by promoting harmony in mind, body and spirit for the entire family. Relaxing tables and chairs in the waiting area are made all the more inviting with the trickling water of the corner pond. Glass block and indirect lighting focuses the observer on the open space in front. A well-padded regulation dojo floor is home to the many forms of the body, mind and spirit exercises taught here.
Sensei Raymond Ata had a vision to create a Center that concentrated on making personal improvement available for everyone. Born of 25 years of experience, just over five years ago, the Harmony Center opened it doors. The Center has allowed more people to get active in programs like Karate, Taekwon Do, Kickboxing, Bootcamp, and Zumba. The focus of the Harmony Center has ensured there are programs for men, women and children at all levels of expertise so that everyone can learn something new and challenging. The Center employs only the top instructors in the area to ensure the quality in the lessons is maintained. All available curriculums may be adapted to the individual’s capabilities so there is a place for everyone, and everyone can participate. For instance, children with attention deficient disorder, physical or mental disabilities find fitness and fulfillment in the Center’s programs. One of the students that Sensei Ata is most proud of is a child in a wheelchair who has achieved his 4th belt in Karate.
As it takes a fraction of a second to abduct a child, afternoon family orientated classes start at 4:30 and focus on anti-bullying strategies. Bullying most often begins at home within the family unit, so Sensei Ata has created a program for parents and children to join in self-defense while learning the proper ways in which to deal with bullies. Students are taught to help each other by standing beside the person being bullied. Thusly a third person will join them and so on and so forth. Bullies are cowards for the for the most part and this is a non-confrontational way to adequately diffuse what can be a volatile situation. Participants are to put to practical use the rules learned in these classes and apply them at home and in school making them a way of life. Sensei Ata takes these lessons into local schools providing lunchtime programs to the students. The most important message of all, the Sensei explains, is that, “you cannot defend others; you can stand beside them or hold them back. Do not fight for someone else by putting yourself in harm’s way. In the long run, the bullying will not stop with physical fighting. The bully will not change this way.”
The Center is open 7 days a week. Classes are available regularly so that they easily flex to fit your schedule. Interested students may enroll in the after school programs or the March and summer break camps.
There is more to the Harmony Center then just fitness however, it plays host to movie nights, pizza nights, seminars, and parties as well as marching in the Pickering Santa Clause Parade. The Center is proud to support charities for research into breast cancer, autism, heart and stroke as well as the Jump Start program. The Harmony Center is available to the community for private parties, corporate catering or team building events.
The Harmony Center is more then just a fitness center; it is a community.
